Dairy Days of Summer #festfoods

I scream, you scream, we all scream for … milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream! It’s Dairy Month, so let’s celebrate with all the delicious foods that make up the dairy food group. These foods provide important nutrients, like calcium, potassium, vitamin D and protein, that promote bone and teeth health and help maintain healthy blood pressure. (Just be sure to choose fat free or low fat choices from the dairy group!)

Let’s start with milk. There is no better way to wash down a fabulously rich dessert, like Dark Chocolate & Raspberry Almond Butter Bars, Peanut Butter Chocolate Brownies, or Lemon Crème Crumb Bars. Milk is also my drink of choice to take the bite off some of my spicy favorites, including Grilled Sweet Corn with Chili Lime Butter and Chicken Tikka Masala.

Moving on to one to a Wisconsinite favorite … cheese! If you haven’t already visited our amazing cheese island at Festival near the deli department, be sure to stop by on your next shopping trip! We carry a wide variety of specialty cheeses, and many of them come from local farms right here in Wisconsin. These cheeses can be used in fresh recipes, like Melon Mozzarella Basil Bites, Watermelon Feta Salad, Quinoa Caprese Salad, and Kale, Artichoke & Goat Cheese Frittata Cups. Watch the video below to learn about these cheeses and how to enjoy them this summer.

If you’re a regular reader of our blogs, you would know that we LOVE Greek yogurt! Greek yogurt has double the amount of protein as regular yogurt, making it a filling addition to your breakfast or lunch, or a stand-alone snack. Greek yogurt also makes a great ingredient in recipes, like Strawberry Cheesecake Bars and Chocolate Yogurt Dip. We especially like to use plain nonfat Greek yogurt as a substitute for sour cream. Give it a try in these recipes: Pork Carnitas with Tomatillo Salsa, Game Day Walking Tacos, and Chipotle Shrimp Tacos with Avocado Salsa and Lime Crema.

For those of you who can’t tolerate dairy, like my sister with lactose intolerance, the good news is that you can still celebrate Dairy Month with dairy alternatives! Some of our tasted and tested favorites are Daiya Deliciously Dairy Free™ cheese alternative products, Silk® Soymilk, Almondmilk, Coconutmilk and Cashewmilk, and Almond Dream® Frozen Treats. You can find many more dairy free products in our natural & organic department at your local Festival Foods!
